USL News Release
Thursday, July 5, 2007
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL W-League and Premier Development League Teams of the Week for the 11th week of the USL season, honoring Vancouver’s Tiffeny Milbrett and Virginia’s Andrew Hoxie as the Players of the Week, respectively.
Since returning from Sweden, former US international Tiffeny Milbrett has been unstoppable for the Vancouver Whitecaps, helping guide the team to a 3-0-1 record on its Colorado trip over the past two weeks. She scored four goals in Week 11 action to lead the team to two of those wins.
She opened the week with a two-goal night against Real Colorado in a 3-1 victory. She scored the opening strike in the 36th on a nice give-and-go with Ella Masar, who also found Milbrett again in the 49th. Milbrett would take the ball and beat the goalkeeper with a left-footer into the lower corner.
Two nights later against Mile High Milbrett provided both goals in a 2-1 win over the Edge. Masar sent a ball over the top of the defense to find Milbrett, who fired it home in the 48th minute. After Masar was taken down in the box, Milbrett stepped to the spot to convert a penalty in the 71st minute for what proved the winner. It was her third consecutive two-goal match, giving her eight tallies and four assists in just six games.
Fighting to stay in the top two in the division for a playoff spot with the unbeaten Hampton Roads Piranhas and the one-loss Ocean City Barons, the Virginia Legacy helped their cause by picking up a 6-1 win over Northern Virginia and a 2-2 draw against said Ocean City last week with Andrew Hoxie leading the way with five goals.
With just four goals in his account heading into Saturday night, Hoxie nearly doubled his total with three against the Royals. Hoxie opened the scoring with goals in the 20th and 32nd minutes to give the club a 2-0 lead over the visitors and, with the game in hand at 4-1, completed his hat-trick in the 61st.
The following night the William and Mary sophomore again gave the club a 2-0 lead with goals in the 12th and 27th minutes to put the club in position to upset the 6-1-3 Barons. Ocean City, however, rallied to earn a share of the points in a 2-2 draw and remain tied with 22 points on the season with the now 7-5-1 Legacy, who have played two more games.
