USL announces Week 13 honors
Tuesday, July 13, 2004
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the Teams of the Week for Week 13 of the season, honoring Portland’s Alan Gordon, Pittsburgh’s Said Ali, Central Florida’s Orville Mullings and Vancouver’s Randee Hermus as the A-League, PSL, PDL and W-League Players of the Week. Matt Kilareski and Sarah Jessilonis were named the Super Y-League Players of the Week.
The Portland Timbers dropped a half-dozen goals on the Edmonton Aviators Thursday night for the second time this season. Forward Alan Gordon tallied the first three to put the game out of reach, with the final score reading 6-1.
Gordon corralled the rebound from teammate Alex Bengard’s shot and headed it into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. After the Aviators tied it back up in the 17th minute, Gordon recorded his second goal in the 40th, taking a dish from Andrew Gregor and drilling it in from 10 yards out.
He then completed the hat-trick when Gregor snuck by two defenders and shifted the ball left to Gordon, who punched in his third of the evening for his league-leading 14th goal of the season.
This is the fourth time that the Oregon State product has been named to the A-League Team of the Week and the third time he has garnered Player of the Week honors.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds sit squarely at the top of the Pro Soccer League standings with 34 points in 14 games. Part of their success is no doubt attributable to forward Said Ali, who leads the league goals (12) and is second in points (27).
Against the Westchester Flames, Ali converted a David Flavius pass in the 42nd minute to record his first goal. He then added his second and third tallies in the 49th and 64th minutes to put the Riverhounds ahead for good.
The Riverhounds are 9-0-1 when Ali, a seven-time Team of the Week selection, records a point in a game, and are just 2-2 when he doesn’t. This is the first time he has been honored as Player of the Week.
Much like the Central Florida Kraze’s rise to the top of the Southeast Division, Orville Mullings has done the same in scoring, registering seven strikes in a pair of wins in a Louisiana road swing.
Locked in a scoreless draw in the second half against New Orleans, Mullings went on a tear with four consecutive tallies, two unassisted, in leading the club to a 4-1 win.
The following night, Mullings nearly duplicated his effort. With the score level at 1-1 coming out of halftime, he scored three straight in leading the club to a 5-2 victory over Lafayette.
His seven goals on the weekend vaulted him to fifth in the league in points with 35 on 17 goals and one assist.
The Vancouver Whitecaps Women proved their dominance beyond doubt, completing a four-game, week-long road swing to Colorado and Arizona. The team gave up just three goals in the four wins.
Among the leaders defensively for Vancouver was Randee Hermus, who played every minute and also managed to score twice.
Vancouver opened the week in Fort Collins with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday. The following night, Vancouver gave up two goals to Denver, but Hermus equaled that on the offensive end with two tallies of her own. She scored the opening goal 37 minutes in and the fourth Vancouver goal in the 66th for the 5-2 victory. Andrea Neil had the assists on both. After a night off, the Whitecaps finished what they started in Colorado with a 4-0 blanking of Mile High before heading to Arizona, where they drubbed the Heatwave 7-1.
Hermus is in her third season with the club after playing just eight games combined from 2001-02 with two goals. A Canadian international with 53 caps, has played in 11 games this season for Vancouver.
Baltimore Bays U15 midfielder Sarah Jessilonis and U17 Super Nova’s Matt Kilareski were honored as the Super Y-League Players of the Week. Jessilonis scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Reston and Kilareski had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 road win over PSC Coppa.
