Five former USL PRO 'players to watch' this postseason

The 2014 Major League Soccer Playoffs kick off on Wednesday night as the Vancouver Whitecaps visit FC Dallas in the Western Conference Knockout Round. In recent years former USL PRO players have played key roles in their clubs’ success in the postseason, so here are five players to watch during the next month as a champion is crowned.

The 2014 Major League Soccer Playoffs kick off on Wednesday night as the Vancouver Whitecaps visit FC Dallas in the Western Conference Knockout Round. In recent years former USL PRO players have played key roles in their clubs’ success in the postseason, so here are five players to watch during the next month as a champion is crowned.

W-League Sweeps Big 12 Awards

A trio of 2014 W-League standouts swept the Big 12 Conference weekly awards to close the 2014 NCAA Division I women’s soccer regular season, as Janine Beckie of the Colorado Rush, Brooke Gilbert of the Seattle Sounders Women and Amandine Pierre-Louis of the Laval Comets were honored. The trio leads the list of W-League and W-20 players recognized for their NCAA Division I performances last week.

PDL Alumni Set For MLS Playoffs

The 2014 Major League Soccer Playoffs kick off on Wednesday night, with a pair of former PDL standouts set to feature as the Vancouver Whitecaps visit FC Dallas in the Western Conference Knockout Round. Those two - and three other former PDL award-winners - could play a big role as their teams seek success in the postseason, with other members of the league’s alumni likely to feature in the battle for the MLS Cup.

Riverhounds Ready For Resurgence

A year ago, things appeared to be moving in a positive direction for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. A strong second half of the 2013 USL PRO season had landed a berth in the playoffs, forward Jose Angulo and midfielder Matt Dallman had both set league records for goals and assists respectively, and the offseason additions of players such as All-League selection Joseph Ngwenya appeared to make the side one of the strongest on paper going into the new season.

Rovers' Matsoso Takes Conference Award

The University of Kentucky is on top of the Conference USA standings and back in the national rankings for the first time in three years, and the River City Rovers’ Napo Matsoso is playing his part. The sophomore had a hat trick this weekend to lead the Wildcats past South Carolina on the road to claim Conference USA’s Offensive Player of the Week award, one of a number of PDL alumni to claim national and conference honors this week.

Boden Re-Signs With Orlando

Orlando City Soccer Club announced today the signing of defender Luke Boden and midfielder Harrison Heath to multi-year deals, as the club continues to comprise a competitive roster for its inaugural 2015 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Per club and league policy, additional terms of the deal were not announced.
